Stay Calm and
Stay Put

Panic and wandering will make it harder for search teams to locate you. Stop and think. Do not travel at night. Gather firewood and make camp before dark. If possible, camp near water.

Signal for Help and Be Visible

Use whistles, mirrors, bright clothing or a flashlight to attract attention. Give three short blasts (sound or light) as the universal distress signal. Answer a noise WITH a noise.

Save Your Cell
Phone Battery

Check to see if you have signal strength. If you do, call for help. If not, turn off your phone or put it in airplane mode. Try again every half hour. This extends your battery and helps searchers if you're 'pinged' with a message.

Stay Hydrated
and Warm

Water is more important than food. Ration your water; finding more may not be easy. Add extra layers, exercise in place, and use your emergency blanket to stay warm and dry.

Stay Positive and
Be Vocal

Maintain a positive mindset and keep talking to yourself and searchers. Check your surroundings. Try to identify landmarks and waterways on your map to help orient yourself.
